Located in the Laverton region, AngloGold Ashanti Australia’s Sunrise Dam is one of Western Australia’s premier gold operations. In late 2020 a new satellite open pit was approved (Golden Delicious) which will supplement the large-scale underground operation that employs more than 650 people and produces approximately 260,000 ounces of gold per annum. Ongoing investment in underground and regional exploration at Sunrise Dam has extended the mine life to 2031, with the opportunity for further extensions. Operating on an attractive 8/6 (or variant thereof) fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) roster, Sunrise Dam boasts excellent accommodation and facilities.

The mine exploration team at Sunrise Dam Gold Mine (SDGM) are seeking to employ a full-time exploration geologist to join the on-site team, FIFO from Perth. This role is integral to the continued excellence of SDGM. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a diverse and energetic team, focused on the discovery of new gold deposits, the opportunity to experience working in a world-class gold deposit and one of Western Australia’s most complex gold deposits.

Accountable to the Senior Exploration Geologist, you will be part of a large, enthusiastic team of Exploration Geologists developing the knowledge of the ore body and expanding the resource base of the underground mine. The role will predominantly involve logging diamond drill core and managing the underground drill rigs (70% time allocation). Project work, which includes geological evaluation of the mine and seeking to improve business processes will account for the remaining 30% of the allocated time.

  • The Company is extremely committed to the growth at Sunrise Dam, the site has the biggest exploration budget in the global portfolio, with A$130M being invested over three years;
  • The team is one year into the three-year exploration growth programme, which has seen recent success in discovering a new mineralised area of the deposit, and it boasts a fantastic pipeline of high potential targets;
  • This increased exploration profile directly feeds into an increasing grade control drilling regime currently utilising six underground reverse circulation drill rigs;
  • You will be working within a large, multi-talented and diverse Geology team that consists of 15 Mine Geologists, 20 Exploration Geologists, 30 Geology Technicians as well as 160 drilling contractors.

The key accountabilities of the role include:  

  • Maintaining a high standard of safety by complying with all relevant safety instructions, procedures and rules and the duty of care for employees as legislated;
  • Building and maintaining constructive relationships with AGAA staff and contractors;
  • Daily management of underground drill rigs, including data validation and data entry;
  • High-quality geological logging of diamond drill core;
  • Design, coordination and management of drill programs;
  • Management of short-term drill schedule;
  • Interpretation and reporting of geological and geochemical results;
  • Monitoring performance to plan of targets;
  • Weekly and monthly reporting;
  • Process and procedure improvements and updates.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A relevant tertiary or postgraduate degree in Geology;
  • 2+ years working on an active mine, with a candidate possessing some prior underground experience highly regarded;
  • Progression through a graduate program or something similar favoured;
  • Use of 3D modelling software essential, with experience in Vulcan and Leapfrog highly regarded;
  • Experience logging drill core highly regarded but not essential;
  • Experience validating data and working with databases, such as Datashed advantageous;
  • Knowledge of QAQC practices;
  • Very strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • A National Police Clearance;
  • Permanent work rights in Australia.
