Located in the Laverton region, AngloGold Ashanti Australia’s Sunrise Dam is one of Western Australia’s premier gold operations. In late 2020 a new satellite open pit was approved (Golden Delicious) which will supplement the large-scale underground operation that employs more than 650 people and produces approximately 260,000 ounces of gold per annum. Ongoing investment in underground and regional exploration at Sunrise Dam has extended the mine life to 2031, with the opportunity for further extensions. Operating on an attractive 8/6 fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) roster, Sunrise Dam boasts excellent accommodation and facilities.

We are now seeking an experienced Open-Pit Mine Geologist to join our Mine Geology team at Sunrise Dam Gold Mine.

Accountable to the OP Senior Mine Geologist, this role is responsible for identifying and coordinating the distribution of ore and waste extraction for the optimisation of costs and gold production at our new open-pit mine – Golden Delicious.

This role is based at the Sunrise Dam Mine on an 8/6 FIFO roster from Perth.

The main tasks of the role include but are not limited to:

  • Assist in building and maintaining grade control systems and procedures for a new open-pit mine;
  • Designing grade control drilling programs for short and medium-term planning requirements as well as scheduling and coordinating grade control drilling;
  • Geological mapping, utilising digital technology;
  • 3D geological modelling to be incorporated into grade control, and resource models;
  • Creation of short and medium-term GC block models, incorporating geo-metallurgical parameters;
  • Coordinate and interpret blast movement through BMT technology;
  • Contribute to short and medium-term mining schedules and coordination of material movement and crusher feed with the Mining Alliance partners;
  • Interpretation, validation and analysis of QAQC data relating to drilling, sampling and assaying. Ensure high-quality sampling and lab protocols are upheld;
  • Compilation and validation of ore production and stockpile data for reporting cycles;
  • Assist in stockpile management, mine to mill and resource reconciliations;
  • Assist in the coaching of team members;
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the team by constructively identifying opportunities and testing solutions.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • BSc in Geology or higher level qualifications;
  • At least 2 years Geology experience;
  • A high degree of organisational and administrative skills;
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and teamwork;
  • Excellent communication and people skills;
  • Understanding of mining geology including gold sampling and assaying, geological interpretation, grade modelling and open-cut mining methods;
  • Experience in Vulcan, Datashed, Mapinfo and MP3 estimation software or equivalent is preferred but not essential as training will be provided;
  • Western Australian ‘C’ class manual drivers licence;
  • Australian Permanent Residency or Citizenship (Visa sponsorship may be considered for current Australian based Mine Geologists that have at least 3 years demonstrated experience in a comparable position);
  • A National Police Clearance.
