After an impressive debut in 2013, the Tropicana gold mine has consistently achieved or beaten performance targets. Owned by AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd (70% and manager) and IGO Ltd (30%), this large-scale, modern gold operation has been one of the most significant Australian gold discoveries of the last decade.

Along with continued investment and focus on our open-pit mining, Tropicana has also recently commenced underground operations at Boston Shaker.

Tropicana has now established itself as an industry leader in operational excellence, offering an attractive working environment and contemporary accommodation and facilities.

We are now seeking a Senior Mining Engineer to join our mine planning team at Tropicana Gold Mine.

This permanent position is accountable to the Integrated Planning Manager and is offered on an appealing 8/6 (or variant thereof) fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) basis from Perth or Kalgoorlie. The role is a part of a team responsible for integrated planning from quarterly to the life of mine time frames, open-cut optimisation, mine design, reserve reporting, and mine closure planning. A high degree of spatial awareness and the ability to understand the operational execution and financial aspects of the mine plan is essential.

The main tasks of the role include but are not limited to:

  • Be an active safety leader in line with the company values, policies and procedures;
  • Mine scheduling for medium-term and life of mine integrated plans;
  • Maintain current and accurate open pit mine designs in line with geological, geotechnical and engineering data;
  • Design work to support the operational execution, such as stockpiles, roads, waste dumps, and tailings dam construction;
  • Analyse, track and report operational execution against mine plans;
  • Identify, assess and manage risks to the execution of the mine plan;
  • Support delivery of studies and projects with accurate mine design, schedules, and financials;
  • Liaise with peers across the operation to identify and monitor key inputs to the integrated plan, and analyse and benchmark performance to the inputs;
  • Identify and implement improvements to support the continuous improvement processes.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Curiosity and drive;
  • A degree or diploma in Mining Engineering or another mining discipline, such as Surveying or Geology;
  • Ideally, 5+ years post-graduate mining experience in an open-pit mining environment;
  • Advanced Microsoft Office software skills;
  • Proficient design skills with Vulcan or other mining packages;
  • Demonstrable mine planning experience, ideally with Alastri software;
  • Practical open-pit mining experience;
  • Knowledge and experience of underground mining would be well regarded;
  • Effective time management, decision making, and communication skills.
