Procurement Managers are responsible for coordinating and obtaining any goods, services or products that a mining company requires.
Activities
Procurement Managers determine, implement and monitor purchasing plans, negotiate contracts with suppliers and use recording systems to monitor and confirm procurement requirements.
Common tasks include overseeing the recording or purchase transactions and monitoring usage and inventory supply.
Activities on the job include market research, negotiating and resolving conflicts, building good relationships, planning and prioritising, inventory management, communicating with teams and guiding staff on best practice.
Work Environment
Procurement Managers work inside an office, liaising internally and externally by phone, face-to-face and via emails, making decisions that can have a large impact on other teams.
Knowledge
For Procurement Managers, it is important to have a basic understanding in business principles involving strategic planning, production and processing, mathematics, distribution and logistics management, and customer service.
Skills
Skills required include negotiation, persuasion, management of financial resources, management of personnel resources, and interpersonal communication.
Prerequisites
You can secure work as a Procurement Manager with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, Purchasing, Warehousing and Distribution, Accounting or another related field. Vocational Education and Training (VET) and university are both common study pathways.
