Vacation work is practical, degree-related work experience often (although not necessarily) undertaken in a university students’ penultimate year of study and can be a combination of observing others at work and undertaking work yourself.
It is a great opportunity to put learning into practice while gaining valuable insight and exposure into how your chosen discipline works in real-world situations. It is also a chance to begin building a network of industry contacts and may even lead to a Graduate Program.

Northern Star offer vacation work to students in either their second or third year of study for a 12-week period commencing in late November. It is a targeted and structured Program of on the ground mentoring, which allows students to transfer their knowledge learnt during study and apply it in an operational environment. The Program assists in paving their pathway into early acceptance to Northern Star’s Graduate Program pending successful completion of studies with a certain GPA, as well as obtaining positive vacation performance evaluation.
Saracen’s Program seeks students who have chosen to undertake study in a mining related discipline and have successfully completed their first year. Students will build professional relationships with employees, visit site operations, and attend industry events. Saracen’s Program is offered to Mining Engineers, Geologists, Geotech Engineers, Surveyors, Metallurgists, Environmental Scientists and Accountants. Applications can be submitted at any time, with vacation students hired to work both mid-year (July) and over the Summer break (December – February).

KCGM accepts Expressions of Interest for vacation work throughout the year, in Environmental Science, Metallurgy, Surveying, Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical and Mining), Geology, Commerce, Occupational Health and Safety, and Industrial Hygiene.
