A traineeship is a combination of on-the-job training and classroom instruction under the supervision of a professional, either full-time or part-time over 12 months, during which workers learn the practical and theoretical aspects of their chosen occupation.

KCGM is committed to employing locally where possible, therefore applicants for trainee positions are required to have been living in Kalgoorlie-Boulder for at least six months. Trainee positions include Process Technician, Laboratory Technician, Shotfirer, Truck Driver (Load and Haul, Underground or Crusher) and Security First Aid Officer.
Information sessions are held at 10am on the third Thursday of each month at Hannans North Tourist Mine, and KCGM promote workplace diversity, therefore candidates of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Macmahon have accepted trainees from all walks of life, including ex-Australian Defence Force, hospitality and catering industries, administration, transport, retail, and agriculture. The selection process is robust, with hundreds of applicants annually, and can take place from one to four times per year, depending on the Program.
Swick’s Program takes place at a purpose-built training facility that simulates life on a drill rig and supports trainees in completing a National Certificate in Mineral Drilling Exploration. Trainees learn the basic skills required to become an Offsider, which includes setting up a drill site, correct rod handling techniques and use of tools, basic surveying and pre-starts, workplace inspections and reporting.
