The town of Mount Magnet is located 567km north of Perth and is the major residential area in the Shire.

Mining and pastoral industries form the economic base of the town, with tourism fast becoming an important contributor to the local economy.

Facilities

Mount Magnet has a thriving town centre which boasts community centres, a school and local shops.

Mount Magnet has two service stations, a supermarket, café, butcher, nursing post and post office. Other facilities include a local police station, Department of Human Services, Centrelink, mechanic, hardware shop and pharmacy.

Skippers Aviation is Western Australia’s truly regional airline, offering regular scheduled services from Perth to Mount Magnet.

The Mount Magnet Library, built over 100 years ago, is located on the corner of Attwood and Naughton Street. The ANZAC Hall hosts movie nights, sports and other fun events.

The Department of Mines, Industry Regulations and Safety issues maps of available ground for prospecting as well as mining tenements.

Gem’s Outback Diner is described as the “foodie Mecca” of Mount Magnet – a must try!

The Mount Magnet District High School has around 110 students from Kindergarten to Year 12 and provides many specialist programs to promote literacy and numeracy.

Activities

Mount Magnet has a range of tourist attractions such as walking trails to keep you busy; you can even try your luck at gold prospecting.

Follow the 37km Tourist Trail from the town centre, through old and new goldmine sites, to take in the spectacular views from Warrmboo Hill and explore the area’s magnificent granite rock formations, including a natural amphitheatre and cave.

Catch a movie at the town’s original open-air theatre (Summer months only), one of only three traditional outdoor cinemas still operating in Western Australia.

The Mount Magnet Mining and Pastoral Museum exhibits a vast collection of artefacts and photographs from the town’s rich past.

Try your luck at gold prospecting and fossicking. Explore the remains of abandoned settlements, such as Lennonville. In Spring, see the spectacular carpets of wildflowers.

Mount Magnet Swimming Pool features a 25m pool, toddler pool and BBQ facilities, while the Fitness Centre is open from 4:00am – 10:00pm daily.

The Wirnda Barna Arts Centre showcases local and regional artists who draw inspiration from Badimaya and Wajarri cultural insights, stories, astronomy and landscape.

Federation Park features a large playground and BBQ areas, while towards the northern end is the Skate Park and Community Rock Garden.

The local Fire Brigade and Ambulance Volunteers have activities for all the children to get involved within the local community.

Events

With monthly markets and a year-full of community events, there’s plenty to see and do in Mount Magnet.

Markets (monthly): Organised by a local women’s group called W.O.M.E.N Inc.

Mount Magnet Gymkhana: Held at the Mount Magnet Racecourse, the Gymkhana is for riders of all levels of experience.

Astro Rocks Fest (18-20 September): Step out of town to experience the Milky Way from horizon to horizon, as people come to town from far and wide to discover the awesome universe above and ancient rocks beneath our feet.

Mount Magnet Races (September): The Mount Magnet Race Club hosts one meeting each year in Spring, complete with a full day of activities and entertainment.

Family Fun Day (annually): Hosted by the Geraldton Regional Aboriginal Medicals Services.
