After an impressive debut in 2013, the Tropicana gold mine has consistently achieved or beaten performance targets. Owned by AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd (70% and manager) and Independence Group NL (30%), this large-scale, modern open pit gold operation has been one of the most significant Australian gold discoveries of the last decade.

Along with continued investment and focus on our open pit mining, Tropicana has also recently commenced underground operations at Boston Shaker.

We are now seeking a motivated Senior Open Pit Geotechnical Engineer to join our mining team at Tropicana on a site-based 8/6 fly-in fly-out (FIFO) roster from Perth.

Reporting to the Geotechnical Superintendent, this role is responsible for actively supporting all geotechnical aspects of the open pit operations: including geotechnical and monitoring data collection, evaluation and interpretation of geotechnical design and providing timely recommendations.

The main tasks of the role include but are not limited to:

  • Review and communicate work practices to reduce the risk of injury from geotechnical hazards and monitor that all work activities and plans comply with relevant regulations for the open pit operations.
  • Maintain the site geotechnical monitoring systems and slope monitoring databases.
  • Carry out stability analysis of excavations and analysis of designs through kinematics, empirical and numerical techniques.
  • Coordinate routine inspections and report all significant ground related incidents.
  • Regular mapping of pit surfaces.
  • Implement geotechnical and horizontal drainage drill programs.
  • Timely validation and interpretation of geological data, through ongoing data collection and evaluation.
  • Support completion of monthly and ad hoc reports on data gathering, evaluation, designs, monitoring and geotechnical performance.
  • Provide meaningful input and revisions to the Ground Control Management Plan.
  • Plan and coordinate work activities for technicians to acquire geotechnical data.
  • Coordinate the use of consultants for geotechnical design and review, and manage geotechnical contractors on site.
  • Liaison with mining departments, mine planning team, mine geology department and Macmahon regularly.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Degree in geotechnical, mining engineering or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated 5+ years experience in a mining-based role.
  • Commitment to safety, quality and teamwork.
  • Assist with the training and mentoring of geotechnical engineers to enhance site based geotechnical skills.
  • Technical knowledge focus on structural geology and slope/rock mechanics.
  • Exposure to drill hole data base systems such as Datashed and Acquire.
  • Demonstrated ability to use specialise geotechnical hardware and software, including radar monitoring software, RocScience suite, GeoMos, Quickslope,  Map3D, Basrock software and Leapfrog.
  • Proficient at using Vulcan software.
  • Good written and verbal skills.
  • Current manual WA Drivers Licence.
  • Have existing and ongoing Australian Permanent working rights (mandatory).
  • A National Police Clearance.
