Nestled in the far Northern Goldfields of Western Australia, Laverton is a small town with many hidden surprises. Laverton is perfect for lovers of the outdoors seeking outback adventures, rugged terrain, blue skies and wildlife encounters. There is also a real possibility of striking it rich in this historic gold rush hot spot.

Wongi people, collectively known as Wongutha or Wankatja people, have occupied the Laverton area for thousands of years.

If you are not out exploring the beautiful outback, you can enjoy the recently revamped main street and stop in at the iconic Desert Inn for a hearty country style meal.  The town has all the essential services including post office, schools, community hub, library, police and health services.

Laverton has employment opportunities on its doorstep, with multi-national mining companies operating nearby, including AngloGold Ashanti Australia‘s Sunrise Dam Gold Mine, Gold Field‘s Granny Smith Gold Mine, Mt Morgans Gold Mine, Regis Resources‘ Duketon Gold Project and Saracen Mineral Holdings Limited‘s Carosue Dam Gold Mine.

Facilities

Laverton provides locals with many community facilities such as a community centre, schools and a recreation centre to keep you entertained.

The Shire of Laverton Council is located on MacPherson Place and the shire’s council meetings are open to the public.

The Laverton Community Resource Centre strives to identify and fill in “gap areas”, by providing a link to State Government and community services, assisting local businesses and workforce, ensuring community members have access to activities.

The Laverton Library is located at Shop 4, Laver Place and is open Monday to Friday, while the Aquatic Centre features a 25m four lane Lap Pool, a Leisure Pool, a spa and other fun water features.

Laverton Youth Centre’s ongoing activity programs are designed to provide a variety of participatory, cultural, educational, learning, artistic, healthy, challenging and fun activities. Laverton School is a Remote Teaching Service School, with approximately 105 students from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Located in the heart of Laverton, the historic Desert Inn Hotel was estimated to have been constructed in 1902 and opened the same year in July.

Located at the start of the Great Central Road, Laverton Caravan Park offers travellers a peaceful resting place at the beginning and end of the adventurous desert trek through the Cosmo Newberry mining region and central reserves to one of Australia’s greatest icons, Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.

MEEDAC (Midwest Employment and Economic Development Aboriginal Corporation) is a Community Development Program that provides a single point of contact for job seekers and employers in the Midwest-West and Goldfields-Yaaliku regions, which includes Laverton.

The Laverton Crisis Intervention Service opened in April 2015 as an on-call safe house for women and children experiencing family and domestic violence or crisis and promotes the safety and wellbeing of women and children in the Laverton community and surrounding area.

Laverton Airport is located on Sullivan Road approximately 2.8km Northeast of the town centre.

Other facilities located in Laverton include a post office, hospital, police station, football oval, Department of Transport, St John Ambulance, Fire Brigade, Service Station and a Centrelink.

Activities

Laverton boasts a wide variety of activities for locals, including hiking and discovery trails, as well as a small museum.

The Great Beyond Explorers Hall of Fame in Laverton allows visitors to be transported to a time of exploration and endeavour as the heroes of the inland tell their stories on hardship, bravery and perseverance in harsh and dangerous conditions.

The Laverton Sports Club is located on Weld Drive and caters to multiple sports: such as darts, tennis, netball and squash. Also, on Weld Drive is the Laverton Golf Club, which is a 9-hole course.

Laverton Outback Gallery displays art and craft made by the local Wongi people. The artists have connections to the land and share their stories through their making.

On the Outback Way you can travel from Laverton, Western Australia to Winton, Queensland which is 2800km (1600km of dirt road). There is a maximum of 300km between food, fuel and sleep stops. An epic road trip on Australia’s Longest Shortcut; connecting the Reef, the Rock and the West.

Within the Old Police Precinct are the original Police Sergeant’s house, office and jail, all of which have been extensively refurbished in recent years.

Located 28km from Laverton is the Windarra Mine Site Lookout. This is the site of the Windarra Nickel Mine, made famous during the Poseidon Nickel Boom 1969. The lookout provides panoramic views over the famous site and its main mining structures that remain standing.

As part of the Golden Quest Discovery Trail, visit the Dr Laver statue and discover the significant role he played in the Laverton area. Other sites on the trail close to Laverton include Mt Morgan, Hawks Nest and Murrin Murrin.

Being in the red heart of WA, Laverton is not only the start of the Outback Way. It is also the gateway to a number of four wheel drive adventure tracks including the Anne Beadell Highway, Gunbarrel Highway, David Carnegie Road and Hann’s Track.

Situated approximately 20km from Laverton, all that remains of the infamous Burtville town site is the resting place of some of our early prospectors and miners.

The Laverton Men’s Shed is the perfect place to start a new project, finish and old one or to simply chat to other locals.

Laverton has events throughout the year to mark in your calendar.

Laverton Races (Mid-October): Held annually, the Races is an iconic day in the region. It includes Fashions on the Field as well as a Bookmaker and Tote facilities to complement the day.

Laverfest (25-28 September): Marking the epic cycle journey made by Dr Charles Laver to establish the British Flagship Mine, Laverfest celebrates over 3 days with food markets, a gala ball, live entertainment and much more.
