Leinster, WA

Overview

Leinster is located in the Northern Goldfields of Western Australia, 4km east of the Goldfields Highway in the Shire of Leonora, 371km north from Kalgoorlie-Boulder and was established in 1976. Local gold mines include Gold Fields‘ Agnew Gold Mine, Ramelius Resources‘ Vivien Gold Mine and Saracen Mineral Holdings‘ Thunderbox operations.

It is a town purpose-built to house and provide services for the workers on nearby mine sites, and some of their families. The town consists of 283 houses, a caravan park, some 800 single persons quarters and motel services to support a population of 700 residents and 700 Fly-In, Fly-Out personnel.

Like many WA towns, Leinster has its own slogan or two, known either as the “Home of the Wedge Tailed Eagle” or “The Jewel of the Northern Goldfields”.

Facilities

Leinster has a wide variety of shopping facilities, schools and local eateries to keep you busy.

Leinster Community Resource Centre in the shopping centre complex have a dedicated computer providing free internet access, a diverse range of brochures, fact sheets and booklets on government and non-government services available to residents. Shopping facilities at Leinster include a comprehensive supermarket, beautician, post office, service station, newsagency, coffee shop, hairdressing salon and nursery. A petrol station, police station and mechanic are also available.

The Leinster Community School is an Independent Public School that caters for Kindergarten to Year 6 students. For older students, the Distance Education Centre Program is available. A pre-primary centre, day-care centre and playgroup are also available for younger children.

The Leinster Tavern Bar and Bistro is the local pub of the Leinster Township as well as the Leinster Mess.

In addition to a doctor, Leinster also has a Silver Chain Nursing Post which is staffed by two nurses and is open five days a week. Emergencies are dealt with by the St John’s Ambulance sub-centre.

The active sporting population of Leinster is catered for with an Olympic-sized swimming pool, health and fitness centre, basketball courts, tennis courts, 18-hole golf course and an indoor sporting stadium.

The countryside around Leinster is inhabited by kangaroos, emus and wedge-tailed eagles. It’s dotted with many interesting rock formations towards the East.

Events

The Leinster District Race Club races twice a year with the popular Leinster Cup Race held in October. Local miners such as Ramelius Resources and Saracen Mineral Holdings are sponsors of the annual race day bringing locals and race goers from Perth together for a fun day out.
