Although situated over 590km east from WA’s capital city Perth, travelling to and from Kalgoorlie-Boulder is easy, with the options of air, rail or road at your fingertips. It is also a popular stopover for those about to embark on an epic road trip across the Nullarbor Plain.

Facilities

Kalgoorlie has a lively main street, with a wide variety of shops and eateries to explore.

Qantas operate daily hour-long flights to and from Perth, with discounted fares for residents, while TransWA’s passenger train, The Prospector, runs nine round trips each week between Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the East Perth train station, averaging just under seven hours travel time. Access from the eastern states is available via the Indian Pacific train.

Living in Kalgoorlie-Boulder is an exciting prospect. The City is home to a number of public and private primary and secondary schools, as well as Curtin University’s Western Australian School of Mines.

There’s an abundance of sporting clubs and social groups, places to eat, a range of shopping and retail options, a local cinema and plenty of parks and green spaces to enjoy. The ‘lungs’ of the city, the Karlkurla Bushland Park, comprises of 200 hectares of natural regrowth bush land, including over 2,000 trees and shrubs planted by community volunteers, and a 4km walking trail.

There are a number of fantastic public facilities available, such as the William Grundt Memorial Library, Eastern Goldfields Community Centre and the C.Y. O’Connor Men’s Shed.

The Goldfields Oasis Recreation Centre is a multipurpose sports and aquatic complex with services that include personal trainers, a swim school, group fitness classes, kids club and creche.

The Kalgoorlie Golf Course is a premier, 18 hole grass course which is consistently ranked among the top public access golf courses in Australia. It is home to the Goldfields Golf Club and offers golfers and diners tasty meals at The Waterhole Bar and Bistro, as well as a fully equipped pro shop, driving range and club hire.

The Goldfields Arts Centre plays host to local and touring acts, with performances ranging from Opera Australia and the WA Ballet, to The Waifs and Toni Childs, and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Kevin Bloody Wilson.

Activities

There are plenty of things to see and do, from gold experiences to outdoor adventures. The City is also home to a diverse range of social and sporting groups.

Gold experiences include the self-guided interactive Kalgoorlie #heartofgold Discovery Trail, the regional Goldfields Drive Trail or the marathon Golden Quest Discovery Trail; the fascinating exhibitions at the Museum of the Goldfields; the unique Super Pit Tour or realistic mine site experience at Hannans North Tourist Mine; as well as prospecting for your own gold.

The Goldfields War Museum and local history archives offer deeper insight into the City’s past.

Residents can also enjoy the various cycling or walking trails available or take their pick from over 50 local sporting clubs and leagues: including football, netball, cricket, basketball, BMX, cheerleading, kickboxing, bowling and more.

There is a diverse variety of other social and cultural groups and activities on offer, including choirs, the Eastern Goldfields Historical Society, amateur dramatic groups, art exhibitions and cultural associations.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder is also home to an array of dynamic events that will appeal to both young and old, held throughout the year; from the summer sunset concerts through to the end-of-year Christmas celebrations.

Art Prize: The City’s Art Prize is a popular and esteemed regional art competition that attracts artists from all across Australia.

Sunset at the Soundshell (January-February): An outdoors concert series held during the summer, featuring Australian artists.

Goldfields KidsFest (April): A free event for the children of Kalgoorlie-Boulder with rides, activities, live music and much more.

Youthfest (May): A great free event packed with live music, skate competitions and clinics, plenty of food options and a heap of activities and entertainment, all free for the youth of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

Multicultural Festival (June): The City’s largest cultural celebration with fantastic entertainment and over 30 stalls to browse, this event is one not to be missed.

St Barbara’s Festival (November-December): The annual Festival is a free event that celebrates the community and the holiday season, with the showcase of the festival being the street parade.
